CaliforniaChoice Allows Employees to Choose HMO, PPO, or EPO Coverage

September 15, 2023by Alex Strautman

If you’re finding it challenging to attract – and retain – employees in today’s market, consider revisiting your employee benefits package. Multiple surveys – including the MetLife U.S. Employee Benefit Trends Study – say medical/health insurance is a high-valued employee benefit. It’s considered a “must have” by nearly four out of five workers (79%).

Today’s workplace is more diverse than ever. That makes it difficult for employers to find a health plan that works for all employees. A HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) might work for those who rarely visit the doctor and want to minimize their costs. However, others who want more choice might prefer a PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) or EPO (Exclusive Provider Organization). With a HMO, you usually have a Primary Care Physician (PCP) who manages your health care. With a PPO and EPO, you can often self-refer to a specialist without going through a PCP.

With CaliforniaChoice, your employees aren’t limited. Our program gives you the ability to offer your employees a program that includes HMOs, PPOs, EPOs, and Health Savings Account-qualified High Deductible Health Plans (HDHPs).

More Plan Choices

The CaliforniaChoice provides everything you and your employees need:

  • Eight health plans and 20+ networks – through a single health program
  • A choice of 130+ options across all four Affordable Care Act (ACA) tiers: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum
  • Cost control with Defined Contribution – you choose how much you put toward employees’ insurance; then they apply that contribution to the cost of the plan they like best (If they choose a plan that costs more than you’re contributing, employees pay the difference.)
  • Greater access to providers – including 80,000+ doctors and nearly 400 hospitals
  • Options for Dental, Vision, Acupuncture + Chiropractic, and Life Insurance
  • One bill for all employees’ coverage – even if employees enroll in different plans

You might select a PPO from Anthem Blue Cross because you and your spouse want access to a particular doctor or hospital in the Anthem network. One of your employees might prefer a local or regional HMO like Sutter Health Plus, Western Health Advantage, or Sharp Health Plan.

A third person might want an HMO plan Health Net, Kaiser Permanente, or UnitedHealthcare. Others might choose an EPO from Anthem or Cigna + Oscar. Someone might choose an HSA-compatible plan. With CaliforniaChoice, it’s possible to choose the plan that fits their unique needs.

Even better, at renewal, you can adjust your premium contribution, up or down. That gives you complete control over what you’re spending on employee benefits for another 12 months. Your employees can change plans and still stay in the CaliforniaChoice program.
