5 Ways CaliforniaChoice Works for Trucking Companies

March 16, 2024by Alex Strautman

California ranks second in the United States for the number of truck drivers. It has more than 172,000 individuals working in the trucking industry. According to a leading national contract carrier, that means of every 1,000 jobs in the Golden State, eight belong to a trucker.

If you are engaged in trucking in California and you want to offer health insurance to your employees, ask your insurance agent or employee benefits broker about CaliforniaChoice. The CaliforniaChoice private health exchange has been offering small business employee benefits for 28 years. CaliforniaChoice delivers “big business benefits” to trucking firms without a big-ticket price.

At CaliforniaChoice, our approach to health insurance is different from that of our competitors. We know you and your employees are different. Your health care needs are different from others’ needs. We are different, too. That’s why we offer a “California Different” way to delivering benefits to your employees.

Whether you have a single employee, 10 employees, 50, or 100. Our program offers you – and them – greater access to health care providers than any other single program in California.

Health Insurance for Trucking Companies

1: Find a Plan That Fits!

One of the primary benefits of CaliforniaChoice is flexibility. Members can choose from more coverage options than a traditional health plan. You and your employees have eight health plans and dozens of coverage options. Statewide, there are 130+ options available.

You might choose a Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plan because of a particular doctor or hospital in its network. One of your employees, who rarely visits the doctor, might choose a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plan. A third employee might choose an Exclusive Provider Organization (EPO) plan, which combines features of a PPO and HMO. A fourth employee might select an Health Savings Account-compatible HMO because of cost and tax considerations. Whatever your needs may be, it’s your (and their) choice with CaliforniaChoice.

The eight health plans participating in CaliforniaChoice are:

  • Anthem Blue Cross
  • Cigna + Oscar
  • Health Net
  • Kaiser Permanente
  • Sharp Health Plan
  • Sutter Health Plus
  • UnitedHealthcare
  • Western Health Advantage

The availability each plan depends on where you and your employees live. Some plans are available across the state, while others are regional.

2: You Determine Your Costs

CaliforniaChoice not only offers you and your employees more to choose from. It lets you decide how much you want to contribute to employees’ premiums.

You can select a Fixed Percentage (50% to 100%) of a specific plan or benefit. Or you can contribute a Fixed Dollar Amount for each employee. (All employees must receive the same contribution to their premiums.)

Employees then apply your generous contribution to the health plan and benefits they like best. If they select a plan that costs more than you’re contributing, the employee pays the difference. It’s that simple.

When your renewal comes around, you have the option to change your premium contribution for your next plan year. You can adjust it up or down. That puts you in control over what you spend for another 12 months. If your employees want to make a change, they can move to a different plan and still stay in the CaliforniaChoice program.

3: Medical + So Much More

CaliforniaChoice doesn’t stop with health coverage. You can add Ancillary for your employees, too:

  • Dental: Choose from two Dental plans – a SmileSaverSM Dental HMO or an Ameritas PPO.
  • Vision: The Voluntary Vision program from Vision One Eyecare offers discounts on vision care services and prescription eyewear.
  • Chiropractic: Landmark Healthplan offers chiropractic coverage for exams and adjustments plus optional benefits for acupuncture.
  • Life and AD&D: Coverage from $5,000 to $100,000 is available from Assurity Life with Accidental Death & Dismemberment benefits and a living benefits provision.
4: Value-Added Extras

Our Business Solutions Suite and Member Value Suite include a range of “extras” that you and your employees will appreciate, including:

  • A no-cost Premium Only Plan (POP)
  • A Flexible Spending Account (FSA) (for groups with 15 or more employees)
  • COBRA participant invoicing, premium collection, and remittance (Cal-COBRA or federal COBRA billing services depend on your company’s group size)
  • Reduced Dental Care service fees through Dentegra® Smile Club providers
  • Savings on hearing tests, hearing aids, batteries, and more from EPIC Hearing Service Plan
  • Prescription drug savings when using the California Rx Card (you may be able to reduce your Rx out-of-pocket costs to less than your health plan copay)
  • A free Cal Perks membership can save you and your employees money on tickets to theme and water parks, sporting events, museums, movies, and more
  • Discounts on fitness center memberships and wellness

CaliforniaChoice offers benefits way beyond improved health care.

5: Attract & Retain Workers

The labor market continued to add new jobs during Q1. That makes it increasing important that you are able to compete with other employers. CaliforniaChoice can help you boost job satisfaction and reduce employee absenteeism.
