Open enrollment season is here, and we know how hectic it can get. Renewals, deadlines, decisions… and lots of questions from employees. That’s why created a quick Open Enrollment Checklist to help you stay organized and make this year’s OE your smoothest yet.
1. Partner with a Health Insurance Broker
Start with an expert in your corner. A good and trusted health insurance broker can help you shop the benefits marketplace, compare plans, and get the most value for your budget. Here’s the best part. Brokers are paid by the insurance carrier and not by you. So, whether you use a broker or not, your group health insurance premium costs the same.
Brokers also know the local market inside and out. They’ll have insights into which plans have the best networks, pricing, and services. That makes comparing options a whole lot easier.
2. Pre-enrollment Prep
Before open enrollment starts, take a few minutes to review and update employee info (including dependents). Your broker will need accurate data for quoting and renewals. This is also a great time to:
- Review your current plan details
- Ask employees what they like — and what could be better
- Consider adding voluntary benefits like Dental, Vision, or Life coverage
A few small updates now can make a big difference later.
3. Communicate Early and Often
Transparency is key during the open enrollment period. Keep your employees in the loop. Share plan summaries, FAQs, and important dates so they know what’s coming and what to expect. Make sure to highlight:
- What’s new or changing this year
- When open enrollment starts and ends
- What happens if they miss the deadline
- How to compare plan options
The more informed your team is, the easier your open enrollment will be.
4. Make Enrollment Easy
When it’s time to enroll, focus on education. Walk employees through their options and answer questions. If you can’t meet in person, try hosting a live webinar or recording a short video overview. The goal: make sure everyone feels confident choosing their coverage.
5. Follow Up and Get Feedback
After enrollment wraps up, send a confirmation message to employees letting them know their selections are complete.
- Include helpful reminders like:
- When to expect ID cards
What to do if care is needed before cards arrive
Then, send a short post-enrollment survey to gather feedback. Understanding what worked, and what didn’t, will make next year’s open enrollment season even better.
