California is home to thousands of nonprofits and religious organizations, employing tens of thousands of people across the state. Whether big or small, these groups share a common challenge: how to attract and keep great employees.
It’s not just about salaries – nonprofit employees value work-life balance, health insurance, retirement benefits, and paid time off. When it comes to employee benefits, CaliforniaChoice helps you provide top-notch coverage at a price you can afford, so you can recruit and retain talent for your organization.
With CaliforniaChoice, you can offer your team members access to 100+ health insurance options from leading plans while keeping your costs under control. It’s the only program in the state with this kind of flexibility and choice so it helps you stand apart from your competition.
1: Plan Variety
At CaliforniaChoice, we know that you and your employees are one of a kind. Your health care needs are just as unique as you are. That’s why we do things differently. With our “California Different” approach, we make it easy to provide benefits that work for everyone on your team.
As CaliforniaChoice members, you and your employees can choose from a wide variety of plans. That includes HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) and PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) plans as well as Health Savings Account-compatible High Deductible Health Plans (HDHPs).
Here’s how it works. You or one of your employees might choose a PPO from Anthem Blue Cross because of a specific doctor or hospital in its provider network. Another employee, who rarely visits the doctor, might choose an HMO from Kaiser Permanente, Health Net, UnitedHealthcare, or a regional health plan like Sharp Health Plan, Sutter Health Plan, and Western Health Advantage. A third employee might choose HSA-compatible coverage from one of several plans.
2: Provider Access
When you and your employees become CaliforniaChoice members, you have access to 80,000+ doctors and 400+ hospitals. That means it’s easy to match your coverage to your individual or family health care needs.
3: Cost Control
CaliforniaChoice not only empowers your employees with more choices but also helps your business take control of health care costs. Defined Contribution lets you choose how much you contribute to employees’ premiums. You can select a Fixed Percentage (50% to 100%) of a specific plan and/or benefit. Or you can choose a Fixed Dollar Amount for employees. (Each employee must receive the same dollar amount contribution.) Your employees then apply your contribution to the cost of the health plan and benefits they prefer. If anyone selects a plan that costs more than you’re contributing, they pay the difference.
At renewal, you can adjust your contribution – up or down. That puts you in control of your costs for another year. Employees can change their coverage and still stay in the CaliforniaChoice program.
4: More Than Medical
But the advantages of CaliforniaChoice don’t stop there. You can offer other coverage, too:
- Dental: Multiple voluntary options are available. Two MetLife DHMO plans, two SmileSaver DHMO plans, and a Dental PPO from Ameritas.
- Vision: Two voluntary plans are available in addition to the Vision One Eyecare Discount Program.
- Chiropractic & Acupuncture: Landmark Healthplan offers a Chiro-only plan or a plan with Chiropractic and Acupuncture.
- Life and AD&D: Assurity Life offers Life Insurance coverage, AD&D, and a living benefit provision.
5: Value-Added Perks
Through the CaliforniaChoice Business Solutions Suite and Member Value Suite, you can take advantage of value-added features and benefits, including:
- A Premium Only Plan (POP) allowing employees to pay their insurance premiums pre-tax, while also reducing your tax liability as an employer.
- State or federal COBRA participant invoicing, premium collection, and remittance. (Cal-COBRA or COBRA billing services depend on your company’s group size.)
- A Flexible Spending Account (FSA) that allows employees to set aside funds on a pre-tax basis to pay eligible medical expenses like copays and prescriptions. (Available to groups with 15+ employees.)
